Roma Saints Juniors play at Suncorp Stadium in Dolphins NRL Mini League 2023

The Roma Saints under-8s had big shoes to fill as they faced off against the Redcliffe Juniors at Suncorp Stadium. Here’s all the photos and details from the match.

Earlier this month the Roma Saints under-8s team travelled to the big smoke where they battled it out against the Redcliffe Junior team in the grandeur of Suncorp Stadium.

Match co-ordinator Morgann Edwards said the Roma Saints played extremely well ahead of the new 2023 season beginning in April.

“They had excellent defence and showed really good sportsmanship,” she said.

Ms Edwards said she was so proud of how mature the players were and how well they handled themselves.

“They were so sensible and well-behaved. They really took it seriously and didn’t muck about. There were a lot of people there and they did so well.”

The game was a part of the Dolphins NRL Mini League Competition and was a precursor to the Dolphins’ debut game at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday March 5.

“The players were really pumped. A few got nervous when they were waiting down in the tunnels waiting to go on,” Ms Edwards said.

“It was funny taking a heap of bush kids down there. I think they were a bit overwhelmed by how big the stadium was.

“But they took it all in. They even were on TV on Channel 9 and spoke to ‘Fatty’ Vautin.

“It’s fantastic for the kids to be able to have an experience like that. Not many people can say they’ve played at Suncorp Stadium.”

Ms Edwards said this was a one-off match and the club took ten players that gave expressions of interest.

“Generally no one keeps score. The Saints did score a try, but it’s not meant to be a competition.”
