Roma could soon be a hotspot for competitive swimmers in western Queensland with construction of a $36m aquatic centre now under way.
Part of plans to build better infrastructure in rural Queensland for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, The Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre will feature a 50m outdoor heated pool, a 25m indoor program pool, a vibrant water play area for young families, swim club facilities and fully accessible amenities.
The project recently received a $5m investment from the Queensland government and once operational, will provide opportunities for regional swimming competitions, boosting tourism and enhancing Roma’s profile as a destination in regional Queensland.
The new redevelopment will be worth about $36m, according to Maranoa Regional Council.
In a press release Deputy Premier and State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie said the project would have far reaching impacts for the Roma community.
“The Denise Spencer Aquatic Centre is set to become the heart of Roma’s community life, fostering health, connection and opportunity,” Mr Bleijie said.
“This is more than just an aquatic centre – it’s a symbol of our commitment to improving regional liveability and creating a legacy for future generations as we look towards the 2032 Games.
“Partnering with the Maranoa Regional Council, we are delivering infrastructure that supports economic growth and strengthens communities.”
Member for Warrego Ann Leahy said the aquatic centre would improve the South West’s liveability.
“The Crisafulli LNP government is proud to work in partnership with councils to deliver vital infrastructure for local communities,” Ms Leahy said in a press release.
“Projects like this are all a part of the LNP’s commitment to deliver a fresh start for Queensland.”
Maranoa Regional Council mayor Wendy Taylor echoed this.
“This centre will provide a state-of-the-art facility that our residents can be proud of,” Mayor Taylor said in a press release.
“It’s a testament to what can be achieved when governments and industry collaborate, and it will leave an enduring legacy for our region.”
