At just 20-years-old, meet Chris Nicholson who has spent nearly three weeks serving as a first year constable at Roma Police Station.

The aspiring teacher traded making coffees for a life in the police service when he realised he wanted to help more than just kids.

“I had a bit of a turning point in my last year of school before I graduated,” he said.

“I wanted to be a teacher for a while and I wanted to help kids, and then I thought why not help everyone else.”

With a one week turnaround from his swearing in ceremony to arriving in Roma, Constable Nicholson was excited to work in a close-knit team and build relationships with locals.

Originating from Maryborough, Constable Nicholson was no stranger to small country towns.

“The best part about working in Roma is the small community and everyone just works together,” he said.

“The biggest thing I have learnt so far is that communication is key. Out here there’s no multiple crews to assist you. So you’ve got to communicate to de-escalate the situation.”

Constable Nicholson, who has had his sights set on pursuing a policing career since year 12, said his decision to join the Queensland Police Service was motivated by a desire to give back to the community.

“There’s a few reasons why I wanted to become a police officer,” he said.

“Firstly, to help the community and give back to the community in any way I can.

“Secondly, because of the QPS training and opportunities available. You can branch off into so many other areas once you’re in.”

Formerly employed as a barista, Constable Nicholson said he grew tired of the monotonous routine and loved how, as a police officer, every day brings a new challenge.

“I got sick of making the same coffee orders each day,” he said

He said his friends and family were all “really supportive” of his decision to join the QPS.

“It hit my mum and my partner pretty hard at first.

“My partner lives on the coast so we’re still figuring it out, but they’ve both been so supportive and know it’s a great opportunity.”
