A young rodeo clown who was gored and pinned against a metal chute by a 1000kg bull is back on his feet after just three days in hospital.

Without a second’s thought, Townsville bullfighter Brodie Frizzell threw his body between a cowboy and a charging beast, with his stomach wearing the brunt of the horn.

The 26-year-old rodeo clown was headbutted in the stomach and kicked in the head at a Professional Bull Riders rodeo at Dittmann Bucking Bulls, near Mackay, on Saturday night.

Mr Frizzell was flown by rescue helicopter to Mackay Base Hospital where he spent three nights with major damage to his spleen, bowel and head.

After being discharged on Tuesday morning, Mr Frizzell drove himself back to Townsville with the aid of painkillers.

The humble bullfighter said he was just doing his job.

“The cowboy basically landed on his back and the bull spotted us both — I knew it was me or him and I couldn’t let him wear it,” Mr Frizzell said.

“I remember the bull coming at me and hit me under my protective vest. The horn tore up my rib and into my spleen. The blunt force of it was bad.

“Then it pinned me against the chute. The impact, yeah, it definitely hurt all right.”

The mean beast, I’m a Thug, has a formidable buck-off percentage of 88 and lived up to his name with Mr Frizzell revealing it wasn’t the first time the pair had crossed paths.

“It’s probably the scariest injury I’ve had,” he said.

“Just the not knowing how bad it was. When you break bones and that, you know how bad it is, but not this.”

Mr Frizzell said the incident wouldn’t derail him and he was aiming to be in Brisbane for the decider in three weeks’ time.

But doctors were sceptical of his admissions, saying he’d be out “for weeks”.

Fellow bullfighter Jared Borghero was in the arena with Mr Frizzell and said the intensity of the blow from the bull was rare to see.

“As dangerous as it is, things like this don’t happen that often,” Mr Borghero said.

“You definitely get bumps and bruises but an injury like that, where it could cause internal bleeding, is pretty rare.

“Brodie is bloody tough. Tougher than me. Not many guys would stand between a bull and a cowboy like that. He knew he had to get hurt.”

Mr Borghero and teammate Harley Schofield made sure the bull was ushered out of the arena without causing more damage but spent the rest of the PBR in worry.

“They got Brodie out of there pretty fast so we finished the night off not knowing,” Mr Borghero said.

“We do work as a team but this was all him. I said to him at the hospital he would have given the bull a headache.”
