Yeppoon’s CEADS wins at Building Design Queensland Regional Awards

Among the wins was a high-end home design with an ocean-facing patio and negative edge pool along with the races judges tower, car wash and a Bachelor’s Pad.

As the number of people deciding to make a sea change to the Capricorn Coast rises, so are the honours lining the shelf of a Yeppoon-based business.

Capricorn Engineering and Drafting Services (CEADS) was recognised for their building designs with five Regional Design Awards at the recent 2023 Building Design Queensland Awards for Central Queensland.

From just Darryl Lindley and Kim Laundry in 2007, CEADS has grown to put on more staff based at its Charles St office.

“We’re just happy to get regionals,” Mr Lindley said.

“When people come in and they want to talk to you about a house or a shed, they like to see what you have done.”

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data, 2,366 more people were recorded living in the Livingstone Shire Council area in 2022 compared to pre-Covid in 2019.

“This year and even part of last year, it’s been really incredible how many people from Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sunny Coast, Brisbane, have come up here,” Mr Lindley said.

“They buy a block of land and knock the house down and start again or they come and renovate everything.”

One of their designs for a home on Gus Moore St in Yeppoon titled “Hillside Haven” won in the $700,000 to $1,000,000 category.

“It was a really nice large house, negative edge pool at the front, nice big patio that looks straight out to the ocean,” Mr Lindley said.

Mr Lindley said it’s been great to see blocks of land that have been sitting vacant for ages be snapped up.

“The price of what they (people moving from cities) are selling their property, they can’t believe how good it is when they come here… they’ve got value for money,” he said.

Although, Mr Lindley said the increase in building and construction costs had to be taken into account when designing.

“Building prices have gone up a lot these days,” he said.

“You’ve got to really counter the building price and budget price to make sure that it’s achievable at the end of the day.”

One thing they are passionate about is helping the next generation.

“We have a fair few work experience students come through from St Brendan’s and Ursies... it gives them an insight into what they can do,” Mr Lindley said.

“It’s good for other people here to do training, we find training is a good way of learning.”
