Team last finished a round on top of the table in 2009, the year in which they last made the finals

The team scored a win against the PNG Hunters at home in Round 2. See what skipper Jack Madden had to say about the performance.

The CQ Capras men have achieved something they haven’t done in more than a decade after winning their two opening games in the Hostplus Cup.

They are currently leading the statewide rugby league competition, the first time they’ve finished a round on top of the table since 2009, the year in which they last made the finals.

The Capras scored a 26-16 win over the PNG Hunters at Browne Park in their Round 2 clash at Browne Park on Saturday.

That came on the back of their 24-22 win against Souths Logan in their season opener.

Skipper Jack Madden praised the character and resolve his team showed on Saturday, just as he had done the previous week.

The Capras came back from a 10-point deficit at half-time to beat the Magpies, while it was the reverse against the Hunters.

After exploding from the blocks to put 26 quick points on PNG, they held firm despite a second-half resurgence from the visitors to get the points.

“Again, it was the character we showed, the fight in that second half,” Madden said.

“They (PNG) probably had all the momentum in the second half but again we found a way to win which we haven’t been doing in years gone by.”

Prop Tyler Szepanowski was one of the Capras’ best and was rewarded with one of the team’s four tries.

He was ably supported by lock Jamie Hill, second rower Nixon Putt who topped the team’s tackle count with 29 and centre Jesse Jennings who had the most run metres of any player with 167.

Madden was impressed with the Capras’ first 30 minutes but said the remainder of the game was “poor by our standards”, with the team dropping too much ball and giving away too many penalties.

“That’s something we’ve got to work on,” he said.

“We made it hard on ourselves and if we do that against the better sides we’re not going to be on the right end of the scoreboard.

“As a whole we’ve got to be better, keep getting better every week.

“Our standards are very high this year and we’ve got to be better than that if we want to match it with the better footy sides - and that’s what we want to do.

“We’ll enjoy this win, regroup and move on to Ipswich next week.”
