Rockhampton Touch Red Rooster Carnival in running for state award

It’s the Central Queensland sports carnival that just keeps growing and is now in the running for a state award.

The Rockhampton Touch Red Rooster Carnival has been a fixture on the local calendar for more than 20 years, with this year’s edition attracting a record 173 teams.

The Cyril Connell Fields were a hive of activity at the weekend, with games in age groups from 10 years to 17 years running non-stop for the two days.

Rockhampton Touch president Gary Benbow said the carnival went off without a hitch.

“It just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year, and we’re really happy with where it’s going,” he said.

The carnival has been shortlisted for Queensland Touch’s newly minted Community Event of the Year, with the winner to be announced at the awards night in early December.

Benbow said it was great recognition for the event, which was only made possible by the staunch support of a great sponsor and a willing band of volunteers and association members.

“We’ve got our fingers crossed and hopefully we come away with the award,” he said.

“Even if we don’t, we know we’re already winners because of what this event is doing for the kids and the community.”

Benbow said the carnival was all about participation, something he believes has led to its enduring success.

“It’s not an elite competition - it’s all about fun and enjoyment,” he said.

“The feedback we get is that everyone just loves it.

“It’s not too competitive and there’s no pressure on the players; they just get out there and have a good time with their mates.”
