The CQ Capras women will bring a tough and fast brand of footy to this year’s BMD Premiership, according to coach Julyess Jarvis.
He has put together a 29-strong squad, with about a third of them making the step up from the club’s under-19 ranks now their season is over.
The revamped women’s competition has this year been aligned with the NRLW in a move the Queensland Rugby League says is designed to create opportunities for some of the future stars of the game.
Twelve teams will compete over four months, with Round 1 on the weekend off June 14-15.
Jarvis said he was firmly focused on player development.
“It’s all about building on that pathway from the juniors to the open women’s team,” he said.
“I want the girls to experience playing at this level, which is something some of them might not have experienced before.
“I want to give an opportunity to players in the Central Queensland region who put their hand up and want to put their best foot forward for the Capras.”
Julyess said he had been impressed with the players’ willingness to work hard, learn and grow.
“We want to play tough and fast footy, and really try to grind it out,” he said.
“We’re definitely not a big team so I think being one that works harder than every other team when it comes to fitness and doing those little things right in defence and supporting each other is what we’re looking for.”
Jarvis said he would be looking to skipper Gemma Brennan and fellow forward Sharni Upton to set the standard in what will be their fifth season playing in the competition.
“Gemma Brennan will be someone I’ll look to to lead the way with her tough, physical football,” he said.
“The experience of Sharni and what she brings to the team in terms of her football IQ will definitely be something I will lean on too.”
Jarvis said that with the later start to the BMD season, he was keen for his squad members to also train and play with their local clubs in the Rockhampton Rugby League, something which would compliment their BMD pre-season preparation.
“We want them getting that contact and the k’s in their legs so going back and playing club footy on the weekend will be good for them,” he said.
