It is that time of year where friendships become rivalries as the men and women in maroon and blue take to the field for the annual State of Origin series.
Some of the maroons players will have the heart of Central Queensland on their sleeves as they take to the field with Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, Ben Hunt, Daly Cherry-Evans, Tom Dearden and Reuben Cotter all pulling on the maroon jersey.
For the second year running, XXXX will give up their logo on the maroons jumper with each players’ hometown postcode to take its spot.
Munster will don the 4701 for Rockhampton, Grant will wear 4703 for Yeppoon, Hunt will wear 4702 for Dingo, Cherry-Evans and Dearden will both don the 4740 for Mackay and Cotter wearing 4737 for Sarina.
Munster said it was always an “honour” to pull on the maroon jersey and represent his state and hometown and was “stoked” to learn they would be wearing their postcodes with pride again this year.
“As a Queensland player there is nothing more special than running out with your name on your back. It recognises not only your personal achievement but also the efforts of your family in getting you there,” he said.
“It’s an incredible privilege to wear the Maroons jersey and play for Queensland in the State of Origin, and all we want to do is make the fans proud.
“I remember watching Origin when I was growing up in Rockhampton, and to be able to be playing in my seventh Origin series this year is such an honour, representing Queensland and my hometown postcode 4701.”
State of Origin 2023 will be Munster’s seventh representing Queensland and even seven series in he said there’s always a “buzz” around the series.
“The lead up to Origin is always full of buzz, and the support we receive from our fans is second to none. The support of the fans is everything for us, especially our fans from back home in our communities,” he said.
“I’m so pumped to be wearing maroon and walk out on the field on Wednesday night for Game One to proudly rep Rockhampton.
“It was so awesome to wear my hometown on my sleeve last year and now I get to spotlight it again and show love for my hometown community that gave me so much support growing up, and continues to back me and the Maroons as we head into Origin.
“There’s nothing more important than the support of hometown community rugby league, something I had the privilege of experiencing during my time back home growing up playing with the North Knights and the Central Queensland Capras.
“I’m so proud of my hometown community of Rockhampton and look forward to seeing plenty of future Rockhampton representation in the Maroons in many years to come.”
