Akayla McQuire has made it two from two in the annual Reef versus Beef rugby league showdown, having registered a win with both teams.

The skilful five-eighth captained the Beef team to a 14-6 victory at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on Saturday.

That reversed last year’s result when it was the Reef team, which included McQuire, that reigned supreme.

Beef made it a double on Saturday, the men’s team running out 16-12 winners, with Kazzi Doyle named Player of the Final.

McQuire said it was passion and grit that got the Beef women home.

Tashina Ketchup, who started at lock but also played in the halves, was named Player of the Final.

“We came here knowing what we wanted to do… and we were able to show it on the field,” McQuire said.

“It’s amazing to win. It’s amazing to be a captain, I don’t get that opportunity much so I like to soak it up as much as I can when I do.”

An Indigenous All Stars representative in 2019, McQuire produced an inspired performance, a highlight of which was her defence.

But she was quick to acknowledge the efforts of the team’s young brigade, which included Aaliyah Gyemore, Waverley Marsh and Layne Ivey.

“They’re all young guns coming up so the future’s going to be bright for Central Queensland,” McQuire said.

Winning coach Niccy Muller was impressed with every member of her team, which was made up of players from Rockhampton Brothers, Norths Chargers and Fitzroy/Gracemere.

Reef coach Jason Field applauded his team, which included seven members who had never played rugby league before.

“It was amazing to see them get out and compete and really have a go,” he said.

“I’ve been involved in rugby league a long time but to see what those girls did after just two training sessions against some seasoned footballers was amazing.

“But all credit to the Beef side; they played really well and deserved the win.”
