A skilful halves pairing and a powerful forward pack will help the Beef men’s team get the job done in Saturday’s rugby league showdown, according to coach Damien Seibold.

The Rockhampton-based team will be out to defend their title when they line up against the Jason Green-coached Reef side at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on Saturday night.

This will be the second edition of the regional event, which showcases some of Rockhampton Rugby League’s leading male and female talent.

Beef is made up of players from Rockhampton Brothers, the Fitzroy/Gracemere Sharks and Norths Chargers.

The Reef men have the services of players from the Yeppoon Seagulls, as well as the Emu Park Emus and the Biloela Panthers, while the women have players from Yeppoon and Emu Park.

Beef took the honours in the men’s game last year, Reef in the women.

Seibold coached Beef to a hard-fought two-point win last year and believes he has the outfit to go back-to-back, despite a host of new faces in his line-up.

“It’s a fairly different team; there’s probably six or seven players from last year who are back this year,” he said.

“I’m excited about our halves combination of Mitch Power and Kazzi Doyle, two former Ollie Howden Medal winners,” he said.

“Riley Reid will captain the team. He’s really fit and strong and it will be great to see him getting out there amongst it.

“Another player I’m looking forward to seeing in action is Allan White, who I’ve got playing fullback. He looks really classy and has good hands.”

Seibold said Saturday’s game was all about getting the basics right.

“We just need to keep it simple,” he said.

“This is probably just the first or second game for the boys so there will be some mistakes made.

“I think whoever can hold onto the football on Saturday night will go a long way towards winning.

“If the players turn up with the same passion they did last year, it’s going to be another great game of footy.”

Seibold is a big fan of the Reef versus Beef concept because it gives players the chance to press for higher honours, including selection in the Rockhampton rep teams for the annual 47th Battalion carnival.

The women‘s game kicks off at 5.30pm, with the men at 7pm.
