Woman winched to safety off Shoalwater Bay

A woman was winched to safety on Boxing Day afternoon when she ran into trouble on her catamaran.

The RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter was called to a mayday call near Townshend Island near Shoalwater Bay late in the afternoon.

The woman on the boat, who was aged in her 50s, had been travelling from Airlie Beach when the engine stopped working and the boat became stranded in rough conditions.

Crews were unable to winch the woman from the boat and she was required to jump into the water.

The rescue crew officer was then able to be lowered to retrieve the woman and winch her to safety.

She was flown to the Rockhampton hangar and no medical follow was necessary.
