THE alleged assault of an inmate at the Capricornia Correctional Centre is under investigation.
Two serving police officers have been seconded to the Corrective Service Investigation Unit to investigate the circumstances surrounding an altercation involving three inmates on July 24.
Marc Kyle, 26, suffered bruising to his face and leg from an alleged assault.
Kyle is currently on remand for assault and drug type offences.
No further details could be obtained yesterday.
The alleged assault follows the death of an inmate at the Capricornia Correctional Centre on December 16 last year.
Convicted prisoner Ryan Edward Dwyer allegedly killed Jayde Biddulph, 30, after an altercation.
Biddulph died of head injuries.
Dwyer, who wasn’t due to be released until February next year, was charged with murder and the case is currently still before the courts.
This month a coroner recommended safety measures be improved at the Etna Creek jail following an inquest into the death of Tofia Josen Mataia, 32.
Mataia had been in custody for almost two months when without warning or provocation he punched a corrective services officer in October 2008.
He was restrained, handcuffed and marched by several officers to a cell in the detention unit, where he was held down on the ground, face down, while the officers attempted to remove handcuffs.
The 130 kilogram man was noticed to be turning blue and had stopped breathing.
Coroner Michael Barnes found Mataia died of cardiac arrest caused as a result of the combined effects of severe coronary atherosclerosis, obesity, schizophrenia, a violent struggle; that prison authorities didn’t perform any mental health assessment until nine days after he came into custody and that prison mental health staff didn’t access Mataia’s mental health records.
He said the systems in place at Capricornia Correctional Centre had since been greatly improved.
