Police warning after canister washes up near Cape Capricorn

Police have issued a warning to beachgoers after a canister containing a toxic substance was found washed up on the Queensland coast.

Beachgoers have been warned to avoid handling silver canisters after an aluminium tin containing a toxic substance washed ashore in Central Queensland on Wednesday.

Water Police were doing patrols off Curtis Island when they came across the tin at Cape Capricorn near Gladstone on Wednesday.

The canister has since been removed.

The canister was described as being about 30cm long and 15cm in diameter.

Police say the canister contained a toxic chemical which could be harmful is handled and warned people not to open them if found.

Anyone who finds a canister similar to the one pictured, or any type of container, is urged to immediately call Triple-0.
