A teenager has been charged after an alleged hit and run incident involving a police vehicle in Rockhampton late on Monday.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said just after 5pm, an unmarked police vehicle was travelling south on Gladstone Road when it was involved in a crash with a Holden Commodore allegedly bearing a false registration plate.

“It is alleged the two male occupants of the Commodore left the scene on foot,” the police spokesperson said.

Numerous police units swarmed the area as a search began for the two males.

It’s understood police officers viewed security camera footage at a nearby college as part of the search before the two males were found about 35 minutes later in Rockhampton’s CBD.

“The two men, aged 18 and 20, were located nearby a short time later,” the police spokesperson said.

It’s understood both vehicles were damaged in the collision and they had to be towed from the scene of the crash.

It’s understood two police officers were in the police car and the police spokesperson said no-one was injured in the crash.

On Tuesday, police said an 18-year-old Berserker man, alleged to be the driver of the Commodore, had been charged with one count each of failing to give way at an intersection, driving without a licence, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle, failing to comply with duties of a driver involved in a crash, and using a vehicle which has number plate attached granted for another vehicle.

He is expected to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on September 21.
