A teenage P-plater was “completely stupid” for drink-driving while almost four times the legal limit, a Yeppoon court has heard.

Cartah John Bellamy, 19, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on August 26 to his offending.

The third-year carpentry apprentice was one of nine people to be dealt with on the morning for either drink-driving or drug-driving.

Bellamy blew a dangerously high blood alcohol reading of 0.186 after police intercepted him while conducting patrols of Yeppoon Road at 11.48pm on July 24.

Bellamy’s solicitor said Bellamy was a social drinker who had admitted his actions were “completely stupid and irresponsible.”

She tendered a letter from Bellamy’s employer who spoke “quite highly” of Bellamy and said he had “a bright future.”

Bellamy’s mother was in court in support of him.

Magistrate Cameron Press said it was a very high and dangerous blood alcohol reading.

“It is readings like these that lead to traffic incidents, crashes and people being killed, or people being in wheelchairs,” Mr Press said.

Mr Press fined Bellamy $900 and disqualified him from driving for nine months.
