A young man who carried out an armed robbery decided to inflict vigilante justice while in prison upon a man he accused of being a rapist, a court heard.

After injuring the victim so badly that he needed surgery, the attacker discovered the man was not a rapist, Rockhampton District Court heard today.

Sevese Dominic Isaro, 20, was being held on remand at Capricornia Correctional Centre for an armed robbery he carried out in Townsville with a co-offender in March 2023 along with 26 other offences when he carried out the unprovoked attack, Crown prosecutor Ashleigh Worthington said.

She said the “unprovoked” punch to his fellow inmate’s face required surgery for the fractured jaw and removal of a tooth.

Ms Worthington said it was “premeditated, misplaced revenge”.

Judge Jeff Clarke said it was obvious that Isaro had anger issues.

“You attacked another inmate,” he said.

“You accused him of being a rapist. He wasn’t one.

“You broke his jaw by punching him to his head.

“He needed a tooth removed and a plate and screws installed in his face to repair his jaw.”

Ms Worthington said Isaro and his co-offender carried out the aggravated armed robbery – Isaro armed with a gel blaster and his co-offender with a knife – at a fuel station after doing a dry run on another one, according to the notes of Judge Lynham who sentenced Isaro to four years prison after he pleaded guilty to all 27 charges on May 31, 2024, in Townsville District Court.

Ms Worthington said the pair took off with $382 cash and $140 of tobacco products.

Defence barrister Sheridan Shaw said her client had come from a disadvantaged background and dropped out of school during year nine.

She said when released from prison, he planned to return to Townsville to live with his mother.

Isaro pleaded guilty to one count of causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to two years prison, cumulative on his Townsville sentence, with immediate parole eligibility.
