A serial domestic violence offender is behind bars in Central Queensland after he punched a woman in the nose just three months after getting a suspended sentence.

The 50-year-old man appeared in custody in Biloela Magistrates Court via telephone link on August 9 where he pleaded guilty to charges including contravening a domestic violence order.

The court heard the man, who had a seven-page criminal history, had been “constantly harassing” the female aggrieved before an incident where he struck her with his fist.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said the man’s DV offending was “persistent” and a “contemptuous disregard” of a court order.

Solicitor Richard Parks said the man had experienced issues with alcohol.

“He has history with this person (aggrieved),” Mr Parks said.

Mr Parks said after the man’s release from jail, he planned to move away from Biloela.

The court heard the man had spent 95 days in pre-sentence custody.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale noted the man’s latest offending also included him “frightening” the woman while holding a stick and sending her text messages when there were no contact conditions in place.

“So what is happening, despite you having a court order that says what you may not do, you ignore that - and that is in the background of you having received a term of imprisonment and having that suspended sentence hanging over you,” Ms Beckinsale said.

The magistrate said the “next step” for the man was him showing that he understood DV orders.

Ms Beckinsale sentenced him to 12 months’ jail, activated the suspended sentence, declared the pre-sentence custody and set a parole release date of September 6, 2023.
