Police call drink drivers "selfish pricks"

A driver who failed to provide a specimen of breath after being given eight chances to do so, has paid a hefty price for her mistake.

Sarah Richelle Woolley, 20, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court this month to failing to provide a specimen of breath.

The court heard that at 10.45pm on December 4, police patrolling the Scenic Highway at Mulambin saw the car Woolley was driving swerve a number of times before running off the road, close to a guard rail.

Police stopped Woolley and she submitted to a random breath test.

As a result of that test, she was detained and taken to Yeppoon Police Station.

Woolley told police that she had been drinking at a Yeppoon licensed venue and she was driving home when she was intercepted.

At 11.15pm at the police station, Woolley was directed to provide a specimen of breath.

She was given eight separate chances to do this, but failed each time to do so.

The court heard that Woolley, a waitress in the hospitality industry, had no previous traffic history.

Representing herself in court, Woolley told Magistrate Cameron Press that she had a panic attack while at the police station.

Mr Press explained to her that because she had failed to provide a specimen of breath it was treated as a high-range reading when determining penalty.

“The disqualification and fine reflect that as a high reading,” Mr Press said.

Woolley was fined $750 and disqualified from driving for seven months.

Mr Press also gave Woolley some advice.

“If you find yourself in that position again, make sure you give a specimen of breath,” he said.
