Police had bottles of urine thrown at them and one officer was assaulted with a handcuff while negotiating with a man on the Capricorn Coast who had woken people with his drunken behaviour.

Ryan Henry Crawford Murphy, 28, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on June 22 to two counts of assaulting a police officer and one count of committing public nuisance.

Police prosecutor Sergeant David Longhurst said police attended Murphy’s house in Taranganba on April 25 about 10.30pm after receiving calls from people who had woken up to loud shouting and yelling.

Sergeant Longhurst said Murphy was abusive and “threatening to kill police and anyone else”.

He said Murphy was on the balcony and told police to “f--- off” and that he would harm himself.

He said Murphy continued to abuse police, who attempted to negotiate for several hours.

Sergeant Longhurst said Murphy threw objects at police, including water bottles and cans full of his urine.

He threw six bottles at a constable who was in the neighbour’s yard attempting to negotiate with him.

Sgt Longhurst said a few hours later, Murphy was handcuffed and taken to an ambulance where he struck a senior constable in the forehead with the handcuff, which caused him pain and soreness.

Defence lawyer Allan Grant said his client had been drinking alcohol at a pub, was moved on, went home and continued to drink.

Mr Grant said his client had been to a psychologist to go alcohol free.

“He has to give up alcohol,” he said.

“He has limited recollection of what happened that night. He was genuinely upset when he was speaking to me about that.

“He’s concerned about addressing his drinking going forward and continues to work with that psychologist.”

Magistrate Cameron Press said it was “appalling behaviour”.

Murphy was ordered to 12 months’ probation with criminal convictions recorded.
