One of the 100-odd fed-up Rockhampton residents who attended a rally and then roamed the streets of a crime-ridden suburb as they tried to take a recent crime wave into their own hands, has fronted court.

Isaiah Dustin Dale Blyth-West, 18, appeared in court to face the music over an illegal act he conducted while being part of the anti-crime action in early May.

A motivated and angry group of more than 100 people attended homes in Berserker and Norman Gardens on May 7.

The chaotic scenes were sparked after Torin O’Brien, who ran for One Nation in the seat of Rockhampton in the 2020 State Election, made a Facebook appeal for information about the identity of alleged thieves who recently broke into his relative’s Wandal home.

“The crime wave has been big for a while, I hadn’t been affected until now (but) when my sister and newborn woke up in their room alone with three other men in there,” Mr O’Brien told The Rockhampton Morning Bulletin.

“These grubs have finally messed with the wrong people.”

After meeting at Rockhampton’s Central Park, the group left to visit homes that had been identified as those of alleged offenders.

The crowd descended on a home in Norman Gardens in their dozens, blocking off the street.

Within minutes, a swarm of police arrived and interved.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Caitlin Booker told Rockhampton Magistrates Court on June 14 that Blyth-West trespassed on a Pfitzemaier Street property.

“The defendant has scaled the side fence to the right hand side of the dwelling, gaining access to the rear yard and walked around the back of the dwelling,” she said.

Blyth-West had no criminal record.

Defence lawyer Pierre Lammersdorf said his client worked as a labourer.

Blyth-West pleaded guilty to one count of trespass and was fined $500.

No conviction was recorded.

“You wouldn’t like it if people went into your backyard,” Magistrate Cameron Press told Blyth-West.
