Rockhampton teens walk free after crime spree involving stolen cars

Two teenagers who went on a crime spree driving stolen cars, committing robberies and stealing from Central Queensland businesses will walk free from Youth Detention after being sentenced in court.

The pair, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced in the Rockhampton District Court on Thursday after they each entered pleas of guilty last month.

The boys, who carried out a robbery at a bottle shop, had been held in detention awaiting their sentence for more than 40 charges.

They also entered pleas of guilty to a robbery at Bob’s Bulk Booze, which happened in July last year, where a woman was pushed to the ground during their escape.

The plethora of charges included stealing alcohol, assaulting a security guard at the Cleveland Detention Centre, entering a dwelling at Park Avenue and stealing a phone and other items, stealing a shirt from City Beach and unlawful use of a Ford Ranger at Yeppoon and crashing it into a light pole.

Offences also included stealing a car from Norris Hair in Park Avenue and the unlawful use of a Porsche at Yeppoon.

Judge Jeff Clarke said a Restorative Justice Order was not appropriate for the pair.

One of the teens was detained for 10 months but was immediately released on a supervised release order after already spending time in custody for 70 per cent of the sentence, he was also reprimanded and was detained for another four months for other offences.

The other teen was detained for 166 days and reprimanded, he also received a nine month probation order.

Convictions were not recorded for either of them.
