Sexual assault crime at all-time high

The victims of sexual crimes have had their lives changed forever in the past 18 months, with some of the most disturbing cases in Central Queensland’s recent history unfolding.

Since January 2021 to date, official Queensland Police data shows there have been 963 sexual offences recorded as being committed against persons in the Capricornia region.

Of those offences, 303 were recorded as rape or attempted rape, with the remainder defined as ‘other sexual offences’.

In 2021, Capricornia recorded its highest amount of sexual offences (662) since 2002 when 970 were recorded.

So far in 2022, there have been 302 sexual offences recorded by police.

This month, a Central Queensland man was denied permission to overturn a four-year prison sentence he claimed was “manifestly excessive” after pleading guilty to contacting 11 male strangers on the internet, asking them to rape a woman and carry out other sadistic, degrading and disturbing acts upon her.

His was just one of the confronting cases involving sexual offences to pass through Central Queensland courts throughout 2021-2022.

Man tries to organise 11 strangers to rape woman

Ken Anthony Jabboury was 37 years old when he pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on April 30, 2021 to 17 counts of attempt to procure rape, nine counts of distributing intimate images and three counts of supplying a dangerous drug.

Jabboury was sentenced to four years prison with three days declared as time served and parole eligibility set at August 27, 2022.

Jabboury had contacted 11 strange men via messaging apps between May and September 2019 in an attempt to arrange for them to visit a house in the Rockhampton region to rape a woman.

On many occasions, there was reference to tying the victim up and, on one occasion, there was specific reference to the use of violence on her.

Discussions also included sodomising and urinating on the victim.

Jabboury provided details of the victim’s address on several occasions and he provided her full address on one occasion.

One man told Jabboury he went to the victim’s house and masturbated while he spied on her, to which Jabboury responded that he should have “gone in, covered the victim’s mouth and had sex with her”.

Jabboury had also sent naked pictures of the victim, and other sexual images.

His offending came to the attention of the authorities after the victim found some messages he had sent to the strangers.

The case was so rare and unusual, neither the Crown nor defence teams could find any cases of a like nature in Queensland.

He recently lodged an application with Queensland’s Court of Appeal to seek leave to appeal the sentences of four years imprisonment imposed for each count of attempt to procure rape.

Jabboury submitted the head sentence of four years imprisonment was “manifestly excessive”.

The Court of Appeal handed down its decision on the matter on June 14, refusing Jabboury’s application.

Depraved sex abuse case “worst in Queensland history”

A Central Queensland mother who offered up her four-year-old daughter to be repeatedly raped by a man in what has been described as one of the most ’horrendous’ child sex crimes in the state has been jailed for life alongside her partner.

The woman, 40, and the man, 36, who was already sexually abusing his sons and niece, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Rockhampton last October to more than 250 charges for 234 crimes.

Of the counts, 207 involved the woman’s daughter carried out over a 16-month period.

During sentencing, people in the gallery sobbed as the facts were read out.

The depraved acts on the child were detailed in court but are too graphic to publish.

The facts included five children aged four to 12 being restrained and assaulted.

During the investigation, police located a laptop and mobile phone which contained more than 2500 images and 1027 videos of child porn.

Both were handed life in prison sentences – only the second occasion in Queensland in the past 20 years. If ever released, they would be subject to parole for the rest of their lives.

Jordan Pierce Clark, 22 pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court.
Jordan Pierce Clark, 22 pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton District Court.

A Central Queensland man who preyed on children and revelled in the fact he was sexually abusing underage girls, even telling them he wanted to get them pregnant, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment.

Over a period of 13.5 months, Jordan Pierce Clark sexually offended against 11 underage girls aged 12 to 15 with none of the sexual acts using protection against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

He even told some of his victims he wanted to get them pregnant and he looked forward to having sex with virgins.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on June 2, 2022, to seven counts of carnal knowledge, five of indecent treatment of children with two of those including photographs and one of exposing genitals.

Clark also pleaded guilty to five counts of using the internet to procure children, using Snapchat to engage with 10 of his 11 victims initially, but also used Instagram, Facebook and SMS for further contact.

Not only was Clark sexually involved with underage girls, he had sex with two different girls on the same day and he had started a sexual relationship with an adult with whom he was still in a relationship as of June 2, 2022.

Clark was sentenced to three years prison, suspended after serving nine months for four years, with 19 days declared as time served.

He was also ordered to probation for three years.

Dad jailed for raping teen daughter before school run

A Central Queensland father who raped his daughter urged her not to tell anyone while dropping her at school.

The 48-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty on June 10 in Rockhampton District Court to one count of rape – domestic violence offence.

Crown prosecutor Maryam Yousufzai said the teen victim woke up as the only other adult in the house left for work the morning of the rape in early 2021, while it was still dark outside, and had tried to go back to sleep before her father entered her room.

Ms Yousufzai said the defendant, 48, raped his daughter as she lay still in shock.

Afterwards, as the father dropped her at school, he told her not to tell anyone.

A friend of the victim was informed and then police became involved.

Police found the father’s DNA inside the child’s underwear, under her doona and on her bedsheet.

The father attended a police station seven days later asking about his daughter’s whereabouts.

He was sentenced to seven years’ prison, with 371 days of pre-sentence custody declared time served and was set a parole eligibility on June 4, 2023.

Disability worker molested disabled client

A disability support worker molested a disabled man in her care in a ‘shameful’ and ‘despicable’ manner because she had a sick desire to fall pregnant to him.

Katrina Louise Harrington, 39, was last year jailed for vile sexual acts after manipulated the victim to visit her house while he was trialling living independently.

The prosecution said Harrington exchanged phone numbers and sent sexual messages to the victim who was quite a few years younger than her.

She arranged for them to meet up at a park and Harrington drove the victim to her house and had unprotected sex with him, the court heard.

Mr O’Hanlon-Rose said Harrington told the victim he didn’t need to wear a condom and that he should give her the ‘stuff from his penis’ so she could fall pregnant.

She did the same thing again the next day, the court heard.

She also kissed and hugged him in private rooms in a care centre.

Harrington pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a person with an impairment of the mind, part way through a trial.

She had initially pleaded not guilty but changed her plea after the prosecution presented its case.

Harrington was sentenced to four years imprisonment with 16 months of actual incarceration, with the rest suspended for five years.

Rockhampton girl raped by uncle who shared child porn to Russian perpetrators

A Rockhampton man who repeatedly raped his niece for two years, starting when she was five years old, has shown no signs of remorse, shame or guilt over offending since his arrest.

The 37-year-old was handed a 20 year prison term by Judge Jeff Clarke, who described the man’s offending as a vile defilement of his niece, with the “sheer volume and persistence” of his offending showing “an entrenched interest in perversion”.

“I was struck how brazenly you must have carried out this abuse and kept it hidden,” he said.

The man’s sickening sexual abuse of his own young niece was discovered by a worker preparing his pawned laptop for sale.

The uncle exchanged child exploitation material, including videos of sadistic harm or bestiality, along with his own recordings of his niece with at least five perpetrators he was talking to online in a chat room which had 11 members, including one from Russia.

There were 54 videos he filmed of his victim on the laptop along with 1672 video files and 8005 still images of child exploitation material.

The man will have to serve 80 per cent of the 20-year prison term handed down by Judge Clarke, minus the 1052 days pre-sentence custody which was declared as time served.
