The Gladstone community has been left shocked by reports a man with a knife attempted to lure kids down to a creek near a popular sporting ground last weekend.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said Gladstone police had not yet received a formal complaint about the alleged incident.

Reports have emerged that a knife-wielding man approached children at Briffney Creek, behind sports fields next to Marley Brown Oval, in Clinton on Saturday afternoon.

In an email sent to local sporting clubs, Gladstone & District Rugby League Secretary, Wendy Deacon, informed parents of an alleged incident and urged them to not let their children go down to the creek behind the fields unattended.

“Last week it was reported to us of a man lurking down in the creek, with a knife trying to lure kids over to him,” Ms Deacon said.

“We went down and investigated, however, the man was not around at the time, but a lot of kids were playing in the creek and they were told to go back to their parents.”

Ms Deacon told this publication that GDRL volunteers would patrol the area as much as possible but CCTV did not cover the area down near the creek.

She said the area in question was a busy thoroughfare which was located near local businesses, junior playing fields, and a primary school.

A QPS spokesman said police were not aware of any formal complaint regarding the alleged incident and therefore there was no active investigation.

It is understood GDRL was informed after a child told their parents about the man.

The email was sent out to all junior clubs in the area following a committee meeting on Monday night.
