An assistant manager of a Central Queensland hotel drank about 20 UDL cans before he got behind the wheel while heavily intoxicated.

Reilly Norman Marsden, 29, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on September 2 to high-range drink-driving.

The court heard that Marsden came to the attention of police about 11.34pm on August 11.

Officers saw a car being driven by him approach traffic lights at the intersection of Appleton Drive and Vaughan Street, Yeppoon.

The car did a right turn onto Appleton Drive and police stopped it.

Marsden told police he had consumed about 20 UDL cans before driving.

He subsequently returned a blood alcohol reading of .182.

The court heard that it was not Marsden’s first high-range drink-driving offence - in 2013 he got caught with a .162 reading.

Representing himself in court, Marsden said he was an assistant manager of a hotel, what he did was “very stupid”, and that he had no excuse for doing it.

He also asked Magistrate Cameron Press if he would increase a fine and reduce the period of disqualification.

But Mr Press was not having that.

He fined Marsden $1000 and disqualified him from driving for 11 months.

Prior to Marsden’s appearance in court, Murray Andrew Lerway, 33, pleaded guilty to high-range drink-driving.

The court heard that Lerway was stopped by police about 8.30pm on August 13 after they saw him leave The Railway Hotel at Yeppoon.

Lerway told officers he had consumed about 20 schooners of beer.

He subsequently blew a reading of .164.

The court heard Lerway had two previous drink-driving offences on history.

He also asked unsuccessfully if Magistrate Press would increase a fine and reduce the period of disqualification.

Mr Press placed Lerway on 12 months’ probation with conditions and disqualified him from driving for 10 months.
