A drunk driver who crashed a car into a fence, narrowly avoiding substation workers, has faced a Central Queensland court to get his penalty.

Jake Palmer Cranson, 22, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on December 14 to drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said on September 4, Cranson left Biloela Hotel and while driving on Callide Street, witnesses saw the vehicle he was driving “mount a centre line”.

Mr Boyd said Cranson then drove onto Dunn Street where he struck a fence, narrowly avoiding workers at a substation.

The prosecutor said Cranson then reversed into a power pole.

Mr Boyd said Cranson then drove along Dunn Street where the vehicle “lost” its front right tyre, before he finally stopped it in the middle of Jambin Dakenba Road.

“Once he stopped the vehicle he attempted to leave the scene, resulting in a number of bystanders telling him to stay with the vehicle,” Mr Boyd said.

Police arrived to find Cranson leaning on the bonnet of the car and showing signs of being intoxicated.

Mr Boyd said Cranson then passed out and when Queensland Ambulance Service arrived it took him to Biloela Hospital.

Cranson later returned a blood alcohol reading of .162.

The court heard that Cranson had no traffic history at all.

Self represented, Cranson tendered character references as well as a letter written by him.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale asked Cranson whether the vehicle he was driving was his and he confirmed it was not.

Ms Beckinsale then asked Cranson if he was going to be paying for the damage to the vehicle and he replied: “I’m not quite sure.”

After reading the references and Cranson’s letter, Ms Beckinsale accepted Cranson was remorseful for what he did.

She fined him $1800 and disqualified him from driving for six months.
