Portmoresbey Cecil in court charged with alleged murder of Sue Duffy

One year on after a beloved grandmother was allegedly killed in her Rockhampton home, the case against the man accused of her murder continues to progress through court, with new details in his charges revealed.

One year on after a beloved grandmother was allegedly killed in her Rockhampton home, the case against the man accused of her murder continues to progress through court, with new details in his charges revealed.

Portmoresbey Cecil, 36, has been charged with the murder of his estranged mother-in-law Susan Margaret Duffy, who was 71 years old when she was allegedly killed in her West St, Allenstown, home on August 21, 2022.

It is alleged Mrs Duffy sustained “substantial injuries”, believed to be caused by a “bladed instrument”.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard an update on Mr Cecil’s case on August 23, with solicitor Grant Cagney advising the court outstanding material had been collected by his office that day.

“This brief is relatively large given the charge,” Mr Cagney said.

“It’s our intention now to travel to meet with Mr Cecil in person, which will require a trip to Brisbane.

“Then we can finalise instructions.”

He requested an adjournment of four weeks.

Mr Cecil, who was born in New Zealand and was unemployed at the time of his arrest, was additionally charged on September 11, 2022 with one count each of possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing restricted items and wilful damage.

According to court documents, Mr Cecil allegedly possessed marijuana, a water pipe, scales, grinder and nunchucks, which were found at his home address on Philp Ave, Frenchville, on August 21, 2022.

The court documents also stated Mr Cecil allegedly damaged a vehicle on the Bruce Highway at Koumala, south of Sarina, on August 21, 2022.

Magistrate Grace Kahlert adjourned Mr Cecil’s matters to September 20.

He has been remanded in custody at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre.
