An autopsy will be conducted on Thursday, November 16, on two toddlers who tragically lost their lives after they were found in a car almost a week ago at a home in the Central Queensland town of Woorabinda.
Emergency services were called to a property in the Indigenous town 170km southwest of Rockhampton on November 10 after a two-year-old boy was found unconscious in the vehicle about 6.30pm.
The child was driven to the local hospital and hospital staff and paramedics attempted to save him but he could not be resuscitated and died before a rescue helicopter sent to the town could land.
Police and paramedics then returned to the property about 9.15pm where a second child, a three-year-old boy, was also found.
Speaking to media on Thursday, November 16, Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said a post mortem would be conducted on the two boys on Thursday.
“We are hoping at the conclusion of that we will have a clearer picture of where the investigation heads,” he said.
“We are still working very closely with the families.
“Our thoughts go out to them.”
One of the two young boys was from Cherbourg and was visiting family in Woorabinda with his father, The Morning Bulletin has been told.
Police have said the other young boy lived in Woorabinda.
Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said the crime scene was handed back on Saturday night.
He said the car had been transported to Rockhampton and a mechanical examination would be conducted on Thursday.
He said extra police had been supplied to the community to assist.
“The scene itself was quite disturbing, especially for the young constables who approached it,” Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said.
“Those two police officers have been rotated out this week so we can give them some well deserved rest and recuperation and make sure they have support.
“We have sent extra resources out there to assist with the policing, and also the investigative part of that.”
He said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.
