Police chase through Gracemere backyards for alleged car thief

A man has been arrested after a dramatic search involving multiple police crews, including the dog squad, at Gracemere near Rockhampton on Friday afternoon.

It is understood the man was allegedly linked to a series of car thefts and break-ins from Brisbane to Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed crews responded to Freeman Street at Gracemere in relation to the unlawful use of a motor vehicle, however further details, including where the vehicle was stolen from, remained unclear.

He said one man was in custody at the scene and a search was underway for another man.

This publication can confirm the second wanted man was taken into custody after being apprehended by the dog squad in Elizabeth Street, Gracemere, about 4pm.

A reporter at the scene said police were earlier speaking with the residents of a home in Freeman Street, with a dog squad crew entering the yard and police searching the home.

It is understood the residents returned home to find their property had been broken into.

This publication understands the two men are allegedly linked to a vehicle stolen from Brisbane earlier this week, which was driven to the Rockhampton area.

They are also believed to be linked to a break-in at a home in The Range, Rockhampton and the theft of another vehicle from Emu Park on the Capricorn Coast.

Police have not confirmed the link however the man arrested in Elizabeth Street was wearing the same clothing as a man captured on CCTV on Thursday allegedly breaking into a home on The Range.

Rockhampton Police sought public assistance on Friday morning over the break and enter in Talford Street, The Range, hoping to identify a man captured by CCTV.

“On November 4, around 2.20pm, the unknown man has entered a home via an unlocked sliding glass door,” Senior Constable Tanya Shield said.

“Once inside, the offender, who was captured a number of times on a motion sensitive camera located in the living room, has entered all bedrooms of the residence and conducted an untidy search in these rooms, opening drawers and cupboards and leaving property strewn on the floor.

“The offender has stolen a quantity of jewellery from the master bedroom and a set of master keys to the residence.”

The man was described as Caucasian, proportionate build, brown hair, wearing a high vis orange and black jumper, grey and black long pants, a black baseball cap, black shoes and black gloves, wristwatch on left wrist and carrying an Oakley’s black backpack.”
