The law caught up with five Central Queenslanders this month as they faced court for their drug offending.
Natacha Rebecca Numans, 50, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on May 19 to possessing dangerous drugs.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said on May 5, police executed a search warrant at a McBean Street residence.
Sgt Ongheen said Numans declared to police that she had cannabis in a small plastic container beside the couch and she smoked the drug with a joint.
Police also found a bowl containing a small amount of cannabis in a drawer in the lounge room.
Sgt Ongheen said the total amount of cannabis found was 1.1g.
The prosecutor tendered Numans’ criminal history to the court, saying “it is clearly evident that either drugs are a problem or something this defendant has embraced for many, many years”.
Sgt Ongheen said Numans’ was last dealt with in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on February 6, 2020, for a similar drug possession offence and she was placed on probation for two years - that order had since expired.
“My submission today would be for further probation... or a wholly suspended term of imprisonment,” Sgt Ongheen said.
Solicitor Krissy Cummins said Numans was a disability pensioner who suffered from chronic osteoarthritis pain with her knees “basically bone on bone”.
Ms Cummins said Numans was on a waiting list for medicinal cannabis.
Before handing down penalty, Acting Magistrate Ron Muirhead noted that Numans had been caught with drugs three times in 2016 and once in 2017.
“...18 months later, charged with supplying drugs - a number of charges where an imprisonment term of three months was imposed, albeit wholly suspended for 12 months which has now expired,” Mr Muirhead said.
“And placed on probation again back in court in October 2019, imprisonment four months for drug offences.
“And further in 2020, a two-year probation order... so she’s got a record of offending.”
Mr Muirhead fined Numans $400 and a conviction was recorded.
Stacy Therease Sharrad, 40, pleaded guilty to five charges in Biloela Magistrates Court on May 11 - possessing cannabis, two counts of possessing drug utensils, using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend, and wilful damage.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said that on December 15 last year, police executed a search warrant at a Granville Street residence at Biloela.
Sgt Ongheen said police found a box containing 25 clip-seal bags with cannabis in, as well as three containers of cannabis, and drugs utensils.
Sharrad made full admissions to owning the cannabis and utensils.
The prosecutor said on February 28 this year, Sharrad sent a text message to a woman which said: “Congratulations you stupid c---. Both you and your uncle are f---ing dead. Putrid black mutts.”
A complaint was made to police and Sharrad was subsequently charged.
In relation to the wilful damage offence, Sgt Ongheen said about 2.30pm on March 3, Sharrad walked from her Granville Street residence, across the road to another house while carrying a broken pool cue.
Sgt Ongheen said Sharrad yelled out to a man inside the house and he did not go outside.
“(Sharrad) moved closer to the front of the house and swung the pool cue, smashing the window,” he said.
Sharrad walked back to her place and police were called to attend.
Then on March 11, police executed a search warrant at Sharrad’s residence and they found drugs utensils.
The prosecution sought $1992 restitution for the damaged window.
Solicitor Pierre Lammersdorf said Sharrad had experienced a disadvantaged and abusive upbringing, and she became a mother when she was 16.
Mr Lammersdorf said Sharrad was currently employed in a merchandise role for a bread company, having started that employment in February.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale placed Sharrad on six months’ probation and ordered she pay $1992 restitution.
Convictions were recorded.
Drew Laurence Hedington, 28, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on May 11 to three drugs charges - producing cannabis, possessing drug items and possessing a drug utensil.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said on February 3, police executed a search warrant at a Theodore residence.
Sgt Ongheen said police asked Hedington if there was anything that he wanted to declare and he directed them to a large wooden cupboard which contained a small cannabis plant.
“He (Hedington) stated that he’d been growing the plant for about three months - it was for medicinal purposes, used to help with (his) chronic back pain,” Sgt Ongheen said.
“He said he understood growing the plant was illegal.”
Sgt Ongheen said the cannabis plant had a small hydroponic set-up to assist it grow.
“(Hedington) told police... how it worked and the chemicals he was using to help it grow.”
Sgt Ongheen said police seized the plant, the items used to grow it, and a bong.
The prosecutor said Hedington had a “very limited” criminal history.
A solicitor tendered two documents to the court from Hedington’s doctor as well as other documents.
The solicitor said that Hedington had one unrelated offence on his criminal history from 2014 where he had no conviction recorded.
The solicitor said Hedington worked as a casual operator and he was now prescribed with medicinal cannabis.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale fined Hedington $750 and no conviction was recorded.
Tamikah Maree Jaraminas, 24, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on May 11 to possessing cannabis and a drug utensil.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said that on November 13 last year, police went to a residence at Eagleby in relation to a matter.
“Police saw through a glass, sliding door, a female smoking out of a water pipe,” Sgt Ongheen said.
That person was Jaraminas.
Police also found a bowl containing cannabis and in total, 3.25g of that drug was seized.
In relation to Jaraminas’ criminal history, the court heard this was her fifth time before a court for this sort of offending.
Solicitor Richard Parks said Jaraminas was unemployed and seeking a job, and she had experienced a difficult upbringing being “raised in a drug house”.
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale placed Jaraminas on 12 months’ probation including a drug-testing condition. A conviction was recorded.
Shannon Michael Rudd, 35, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on May 11 to possessing a drug utensil.
The court heard that on April 17, Rudd was a passenger in a vehicle which was stopped for a random breath test at Biloela.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said during a search of the vehicle, police found a glass pipe belonging to Rudd.
Sgt Ongheen said Rudd told police he used the pipe once a week to smoke meth.
The court heard Rudd’s criminal history consisted “mainly of drugs.”
Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale fined Rudd $250 and a conviction was recorded.
