A long-term drug addict claims he shat himself fleeing police and that is how he ended up facing court charged with a serious assault of police charge.

Don-Geoffrey Wylie O’Mara, 26, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court today to six counts of stealing, along with one count each of obstructing police, serious assault police, contravene police direction and failing to appear in court.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Winning said the most serious offence was the serious assault police on March 26, 2024 at The Range.

Magistrate Cameron Press said O’Mara ran away from police when they were attempting to assist him and then he attempted to wipe faeces on the police officer.

“You are extremely fortunate that you did not succeed in doing so because you would have been facing a longer term of imprisonment,” he said.

“Thankfully the officer moved back and the faeces didn’t connect,” Ms Winning said.

“My client was running from police when, he instructs, when he unfortunately defecated himself.”

O’Mara also stole fuel and other items from Woolworths and service stations between July 3 and 14 at Parkhurst.

Ms Winning said her client has two children, is single and unemployed.

She said O’Mara has paranoid schizophrenia and is subject to a treatment authority where he receives a fortnight depo injection but at the time of these offences, he wasn’t compliant with his medication and was using illicit substances.

The court heard O’Mara prior convictions for stealing, breaching bail and had been convicted in November 2022 for an assault occasioning bodily harm and a common assault offences.

He was not on parole at the time of these offences.

During previous sentencing proceedings, the court heard O’Mara, who had been a St Brendan’s College football scholarship recipient, turned to using methamphetamines and marijuana at the age of 14 or 15 after is brother Jamie suffered the heart attack which left him permanently disabled.

Mr Press sentenced O’Mara to nine months and two weeks prison with 88 days presentence custody declared as time served.

He was released on parole immediately.
