A teen has been injured in an e-scooter incident in Rockhampton just as the Queensland Government launches a parliamentary inquiry into e-scooter and e-bike safety to address safety and community concerns around the popular devices.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said last year eight Queenslanders died in incidents related to e-mobility devices.
“We have seen a massive increase in injuries over the last three or four years as well,” he said.
“As the proliferation and usage of these devices have increased, government regulation and enforcement have not kept pace with that usage.”
It is not suggested that the teen was driving unsafely or illegally before the accident.
Paramedics were called to the incident which occured on Friday, June 6 at 5.02am on Lakes Creek Road, Koongal.
The male teenager was taken to hospital in a stable condition with a head injury.
Concerns around the use of e-scooters and e-bikes has also been raised by Keppel MP Nigel Hutton, who said there is a growing concern over the illegal operation of some of the devices.
“From 2021 to 2024, there has been a 112 per cent rise in PMD-related injuries for Personal Mobility Devices riders, passengers and pedestrians and an increase in PMD-related injury presentations at hospitals across Queensland from 773 in 2021 to 1638 in 2024,” Mr Hutton said.
“In Keppel alone we see reports of PMD device user accidents every week, a trend that needs to change.”
Mr Hutton is urging residents in his electorate to have their say in the government inquiry.
The inquiry is open for public consultation til Friday, June 20.
“What we want to see is submissions from as many people as possible,” Mr Mickelberg said at a press conference in Rockhampton on Thursday, June 5.
“Whether that is someone who chooses to use an e-scooter to get to work, whether that’s someone who is concerned about the use of e-bikes in their community, whether its medical professionals, transport professionals, policy experts, we want to hear from everyone to ensure that the solutions we put in place address the issue that is at the core of this.”
