Megan Jane Bennie caught drink-driving, her daughter Leah May Dennis busted drug-driving

A Central Queensland mother and daughter have faced court on the same day for their respective traffic offences. Here’s what happened to them.

A Central Queensland mother and daughter have faced court on the same day after being busted drink-driving and drug-driving respectively.

Megan Jane Bennie, 48, and Leah May Dennis, 19, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on March 23 to the respective charges.

Bennie appeared first before Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale and the court heard her offending happened on March 4.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said at 8pm on that day, Biloela police were patrolling when they saw a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Washpool St and Callide St.

Bennie was the driver and after being intercepted she was subject to a random breath test.

She returned a blood alcohol reading of .120.

The court heard Bennie had no offending of this sort in the past five years.

Representing herself, Bennie told Ms Beckinsale that she was a meatworker and a licence disqualification would mean she would have to find another way to get to work.

“I’ve already got my daughter here for another matter at the moment, so I may be walking to work every day...” Bennie said.

Bennie added that she would “just have to deal with it” and that her offending on the night “was stupid”.

Ms Beckinsale fined her $650 and disqualified her from driving for three months.

During Dennis’s matter, the court heard she had been caught drug-driving on February 4, on the Dawson Highway at Mount Alma.

Sergeant Ongheen said about 6.50pm on that day, police intercepted Dennis driving a Ford Falcon for a random drug test.

She returned a positive for cannabis.

The court heard Dennis had no similar offending on her traffic history.

Dennis also represented herself in court and she told Ms Beckinsale she had been diagnosed with medical conditions including ADHD but “I don’t use that as an excuse”.

Dennis said on the day she was intercepted by police, she’d had a smoke after a stressful day at work which was something she should not have done.

“It’s never going to happen again,” Dennis said.

“When it comes to work I’ll be okay - I’ll will just get lifts to work.”

Ms Beckinsale fined Dennis $350 and disqualified her from driving for one month.
