A woman who bought a $20 bag of marijuana from a person outside a service station took the drug to police, claiming it was not the “normal, organic, natural blend” she usually smokes.
Margo Sylvia Sonnleitner, 66, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on May 25 to one count of possessing dangerous drugs and three counts of failing to appear in accordance with an undertaking.
Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said Sonnleitner attended Rockhampton Police Station on January 12 at 1.30pm and requested to speak with police in relation to a matter.
Ms Brown said Sonnleitner provided police with a clip seal bag containing a small amount of marijuana and stated she bought the bag for $20 from a person earlier that day outside a service station.
She said Sonnleitner told police she often smoked marijuana and thought this particular bag was not the “normal, organic, natural blend” she usually smoked and that she thought it was synthetic.
“She believed marijuana was decriminalised,” she said.
She said Sonnleitner was on bail and failed to appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 10, April 19 and May 3.
Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said her client thought marijuana had been decriminalised and had attended the police station querying what she had purchased, thinking it wasn’t okay.
Regarding Sonnleitner failing to appear in court, Ms Legrady said her client had sleep apnoea and had forgotten.
“She is sorry she didn’t attend court when required,” she said.
Sonnleitner was fined $750 with criminal convictions recorded.
