A Rockhampton mum has walked away with a hefty fine after a drunken crash on New Year’s Day.

Maema Wosomo, 44, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday (April 3) to one count of driving under the influence of liquor.

Police prosecutor Brendon Selic told the court Wosomo was driving her car along Quarry St on New Year’s Day when she crashed into two stationary cars.

Mr Selic told the court when police arrived on scene they saw Wosomo being treated by paramedics.

He said Wosomo appeared to be disoriented and was unable to provide a breath specimen for analysis.

A blood specimen was then taken.

Police received the blood test result on January 20 which revealed Wosomo had 0.172 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Officers spoke with Wosomo at her home on March 17 where she told them that on the day of the crash she was returning home after dropping off a friend.

She also told police the night before she had been drinking a jug of beer at the pub.

The court heard Wosomo had her licence suspended that day.

Wosomo’s lawyer Pierre Lammersdorf told the court his client had previously worked as a cleaner at a shopping centre but had some health issues arise, believed to be epilepsy, that she needed to stop work for.

Mr Lammersdorf said as a result of being on medication for her health issues Wosomo was unable to drive.

He said Wosomo stopped drinking alcohol “completely” while she was getting treatment for her health issues.

Mr Lammersdorf said his client’s plea came at an early opportunity and she had no previous history of drink driving.

Magistrate Cameron Press took into account Wosomo’s plea came at an early opportunity and that she had already been without her licence since March 17.

He also took into account Wosomo’s high reading.

Wosomo was fined $800 and was disqualified from holding a licence for eight months.

A traffic conviction was recorded.
