Khai Draven in Yeppoon court for The Strand Hotel theft, damage

A Yeppoon pub patron smashed a pool cue in half over his knee but there was a much more serious side to what else he did at the popular beachfront venue.

Drinking to celebrate his stepfather’s birthday got out of control for Khai Draven when he and another person stole a wall-mounted defibrillator from The Strand Hotel at Yeppoon.

But his antics did not end there.

Five days later, Draven was playing pool in the beer garden at the same hotel when he snapped a pool cue in half over his knee.

He put the broken cue in a nearby corner and then selected another cue to continue playing pool.

The 22-year-old pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on Thursday to stealing and wilful damage where the prosecution sought $110 restitution for the pool cue only.

Police prosecutor Corey O’Connor said after the pool cue incident, Draven told police he “was a sore loser” and there was no other reason for his actions on that night.

Representing himself in court, Draven, with no criminal history, accepted that version of events and he gave Magistrate Lance Rundle a candid explanation for the first incident on November 17 and the next on November 22.

“I work five out of seven days at a pineapple farm... I take care of my two-year-old daughter on the days I don’t have work,” Draven said.

“I was highly intoxicated (for the first offence)... it was my stepdad’s birthday so I was drinking from... around three or four o’clock (offence happened about 10.55pm).

“I was drinking there (when the second offence happened) too (about 10.29pm).

“Yeah I lost a game (of pool).”

Prior to imposing the penalty, Magistrate Rundle spoke to Draven about the possible ramifications of the defibrillator theft had there been an emergency.

He then fined Draven $600 and ordered he pay $110 restitution.

No convictions were recorded.
