Joel Anthony Huggett, 36, was subject to a probation order when he was busted possessing 4.7 grams of marijuana and 0.016 grams of methamphetamines, along with evidence of two supplies of meth on August 21, 2023.

Judge Jeff Clarke said Huggett’s offending was detected when police searched his residence on August 21, locating tick sheets, digital scales and the drugs.

“There was evidence of actual supplies of half a point of methamphetamines for less than $100,” he said.

“And another supply of half a point for $30.”

Judge Clarke said Huggett had an “unimpressive” criminal and traffic history, along with appalling record for domestic violence offences with at least five aggrieved and many other named persons.

He said a report showed Huggett “did not do well”, and “that was an understatement”, on a probation order in 2022.

The court heard Huggett had been busted drug driving in 2018.

Defence barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said his client was a qualified carpenter but had no “significant recent employment history” and receives a disability pension.

He said Huggett started using marijuana in his teen years, progressed to methamphetamines when he was about 25 and had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

Mr Ahlstrand said two documents provided about his client’s mental health indicated a connection between his meth use and his diagnosis.

The court heard Huggett is now subject to an involuntary treatment order and compliant with medication.

Huggett pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying drugs and two of possessing drugs.

He was sentenced to 12 months prison which was wholly suspended with an operational period of 18 months.
