“I fear for my life.”

This is what a prisoner told a magistrate who sentenced the inmate for punching another Capricornia Correctional Centre convict in the head before his co-accused allegedly assaulted the victim on the ground.

Jesse Michael James Clark-Ewers, 26, was in prison for a road rage incident at Boyne Island where he purposely crashed his car while his pregnant girlfriend was in it, using a fire hydrant cover to damage the other motorist’s vehicle, and attempting to hit the victim in the head with it.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on Monday that Clark-Ewers’ violent attack was captured on prison cameras.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Sarah Rowe said prison guards were tasked to break up the fight and they took the victim to Rockhampton Hospital with suspected facial injuries and a possible fractured jaw.

She said the victim was cleared of any broken bones and transported back to the medical centre at the Etna Creek prison.

Magistrate Cameron Press said Clark-Ewers’ seven-page criminal record was “very worrying” for someone of his age and urged him to undertake anger management courses while in custody.

Clark-Ewers responded by telling Mr Press he had been in multiple fights since his incarceration and “feared” for his life on a daily basis.

The soon-to-be father was sentenced in late September for the road rage incident and the assault took place at Capricornia on December 6.

Clark-Ewers pleaded guilty to 18 charges including assault occasioning bodily harm while armed/in company, going armed to cause fear, and dangerous operation of a vehicle (domestic violence offence) in September and four charges, including assault occasioning bodily harm while in company, on February 5, 2024.

He was sentenced to 15-months prison for inmate assault, to be cumulative on the 18-months prison he received in September.

Clark-Ewers will be eligible for parole from July 5, 2024.
