Violence against women in Australia ‘completely unacceptable’: Ruston

A man who allegedly attacked a woman after she asked him for a “cone” has applied for bail in Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

Jason Edward Law, 50, applied for bail in court on October 18 for a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence offence).

Police prosecutor Brandy Butler opposed bail being granted to Mr Law.

Magistrate Jason Schubert read the facts of the charge to the court, which stated an argument allegedly broke out between Mr Law and the alleged victim when she asked him for a cone, which he refused.

Part way through the argument, it is alleged Mr Law began punching the woman repeatedly to the face and body and stopped when interrupted by a person from a neighbouring unit.

Mr Schubert said police took photographs of the woman’s injuries, which included bruising and swelling to her face, and noted Mr Law was on a suspended sentence.

Ms Butler said Mr Law had a “terrible” criminal history and a “complete and utter disregard” for court orders.

Defence lawyer Brendan Gimbert said his client was contesting the charge.

Mr Gimbert said his client denied any alleged violence towards the woman on that occasion.

“He instructs that it has been taken out of context and that he pushed her out of the house and did not assault her,” he said.

He said his client was willing to comply with bail conditions, including no contact with the woman, no drugs or alcohol and reporting conditions to Duaringa Police Station.

Mr Schubert refused to grant Mr Law bail, stating that he found Mr Law to be an unacceptable risk of committing further offences.

“He has shown in his history he has no regard for any orders of the court or any order relating to bail conditions,” he said.

A brief of evidence was ordered and Mr Schubert transferred the charge to Brisbane, to be mentioned on December 7.

Mr Law was remanded in custody.
