Domestic violence cases rise during pandemic

A Central Queensland man has faced court after he sent a series of derogatory text messages and emails to his former wife over an 11-month period.

The 41-year-old, who by law cannot be named, pleaded guilty in Biloela Magistrates Court on December 8 to contravening a domestic violence order.

The court heard that text message and email contact between the man and the aggrieved, between October 2020 and September 2021, had constituted breaches of that order.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen explained that on October 17, 2021, the informant contacted police about SMS messages and email messages she had received from the man.

“The messages were derogatory and demeaning, and were not considered to be within the good behaviour condition of the order,” Sgt Ongheen said.

The court heard that on October 20, 2020, the man sent the woman an email which said: “I wouldn’t be comfortable if I was you. Mustn’t have much self respect to be content with being used as a c.. dump.”

Then on November 19, 2020, the man sent an SMS which said: “Hope it was a proud mum moment when your son just told his mate his parents were getting divorced. Being a sl.. pays off hey. I’m disgusted.”

On November 27, 2020, the man sent an email which said: “Must be sh.. knowing the only men you’ve f....d both left disappointed.”

On December 31, 2020, the man sent an SMS which said: “Chasing c..k over your kids is becoming more and more frequent. Why don’t you just let them live with me then you’re free to chase all you want.”

The court then heard about a death threat that was made.

On March 29, 2021, the man sent an email which said: “I’ve made it quite clear if he disciplines them or lays a single finger on them in any way I will kill him. I know who he is and where he lives. I will deal with him if required.”

On the same day, the man sent an email which said: “Palm your children off to chase c..k. Yep, sounds good form.”

The next day, the man sent an email which said: “You or that dog c..t (name) will never get an ounce of respect from me. I will do whatever I can to destroy the dog c..t.”

On August 30, 2021, the man sent an email which said: “Don’t bring your latest r..t anywhere near my place. Also, I don’t want my boys thinking I support the revolving door of men.”

That night, the man sent an email which said: “You’re still sh..ing where you eat. Very silly.”

And on September 24, the man sent an SMS which said: “Don’t call with your latest r..t in the background again.”

The court heard the man had no criminal history.

Representing himself in court, the man told Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale that his ex-wife had reciprocated to contact.

Ms Beckinsale asked: “So you’re saying you sent those texts but I haven’t got in front of me what she might have sent you?”

The man responded: “That’s correct, Your Honour. I’m not worried about it, I just want to turn the page... I’ve repartnered.”

When asked about his personal and financial circumstances, the man told Ms Beckinsale that he worked in a well-paid job.

Ms Beckinsale fined him $1000 and no conviction was recorded.
