Gracemere man Jaydon Morris Leahy charged with torture, choking

A man charged with torture, choking and deprivation of liberty after allegedly taking a woman on a two-day drive against her will has had his case heard in court.

A man charged with torture, choking, deprivation of liberty and other assault type charges after allegedly taking his partner on a two-day drive against her will, will have his case sent to the higher courts in the coming weeks.

Jaydon Morris Leahy, 33, is accused of taking his partner, Gracemere woman Krystal Phillips, on a drive against her will over the Christmas period.

She was reported missing by her family on Christmas Eve, and at the time, had last been seen on Old Byfield Road, Cobraball, about 8.15pm that night.

Police will allege Ms Phillips, 32, was travelling with Mr Leahy and the vehicle they were travelling in allegedly failed to stop for police on Christmas Eve.

It will be alleged Mr Leahy was the driver and allegedly carried out a fuel drive-off at a Gympie petrol station on Christmas morning.

The vehicle was allegedly sighted on the Warrego Highway at Miles about 10.50am on Boxing Day with the pair located early that evening north of Tambo.

Ms Phillips was found safe and received medical attention.

Mr Leahy was charged with one count of choking, one of grievous bodily harm, three of assault occasioning bodily harm, one of common assault, one of deprivation of liberty, two of evading police, one of torture, two of obstructing police, three of stealing, one of wilful damage, one possession of a drug, one possession of drug utensils, one drink drive, one of calling a prohibited phone number from prison, one of failing to appear in court and one of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Rockhampton Magistrates Court was provided with an update of Mr Leahy’s case on June 28.

Defence lawyer David Mills advised the court the matter was likely to proceed by registry committal – an administrative process that does not require a hearing in a magistrates court.

Mr Leahy’s matters were adjourned to July 26 and he was remanded in custody.
