Fiancee of eight years walks out on man who lost two jobs

A Rockhampton man going through a tough time made the bad decision to take drugs to cope.

A man who lost two jobs and had his fiancee of eight years walk out on him turned to drugs to cope.

Sean Andrew Cuddihy, 26, pleaded guilty on July 21 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to two counts of possessing a dangerous drug and two of possessing drug utensils.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said police intercepted Cuddihy on June 23 at 1.10am at Parkhurst for a random breath test and licence check after seeing the vehicle parked on Belmont Road, Glenlee, for a period of time.

He said Cuddihy exited the vehicle and police could smell marijuana.

Sergeant Ongheen said police located 3.35 grams of marijuana in a container in Cuddihy’s back pack, which he claimed he got from a friend.

He said there were also three clear MDMA capsules in the container which Cuddihy claimed he couldn’t recall receiving.

Sergeant Ongheen said the backpack also contained a home-made bong along with a grinder used to chop marijuana.

Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said Cuddihy had gone through personal issues in the past two months, including his fiancee of eight years leaving him.

She said he also lost his jobs at Ridgeways when the company closed Australia wide, and as manager of Pizza Capers.

Ms Legrady said Cuddihy now lived with his mother and had two new jobs – as a labourer for an electrician and Woolworths night-filler.

She said he had also made an appointment with a psychologist.

Magistrate Jason Schubert said in his experience, the use of drugs to cope with bad circumstances had not been successful for anyone and led to more problems.

He ordered Cuddihy to a 12-month good behaviour bond with $1750 recognisance and a condition of completing a drug diversion program.
