Details of a shocking incident where a drunk learner driver crashed into a letterbox and then jumped on a police car’s bonnet to smash its windscreen, have been heard by a court.

Ethan Jacob Robbins, 20, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on April 20 to five charges - all stemming from the one incident.

They were drink driving, driving as an L-plater while not properly supervised, public nuisance, wilful damage and obstructing police.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Darrell Dalton said that at 5.30pm on January 15, police were called to Bartlem Street, Yeppoon, after receiving reports a vehicle had lost control, mounted a footpath and hit a letterbox.

Sgt Dalton said Robbins was the driver and as a learner’s permit holder, he was unsupervised at the time.

The court heard that after the crash, residents of Bartlem Street came out of their houses to assist Robbins.

Sgt Dalton said Robbins appeared to be under the influence and residents advised him they had called police and he should wait at the scene until they arrived.

The prosecutor said Robbins then became enraged and began yelling loudly and swearing at members of the public.

Sgt Dalton said Robbins walked up to one of the residents and yelled: “Do you want me to kill you and burn your f---ing house down?”

Sgt Dalton said Robbins continued to yell and swear in the street.

The prosecutor said when Robbins saw the police Landcruiser arrive, he ran towards it and jumped onto the bonnet.

“And with a single punch he shattered the windscreen of the vehicle,” Sgt Dalton said.

Sgt Dalton said Robbins was then pulled from the bonnet by a friend, but Robbins then punched the bonnet of the police vehicle “several times” which caused minor damage.

Robbins was taken to Yeppoon Hospital and subsequently returned a blood alcohol reading of .148.

In court, the prosecution sought restitution of $440 for the damage to the police car and $350 restitution for the damage to the letter box.

The court heard Robbins had, on his history, public nuisance and obstruct police offending for which he was dealt with in the Yeppoon court in January last year.

Solicitor Krissy Cummins said Robbins had expressed remorse for his most recent offending, and had recently struggled with witnessing a best friend commit suicide.

Ms Cummins said Robbins was about to start working at Woolworths in Yeppoon and was excited about that job because it had been more than a year since he’d had employment.

Robbins himself also told Magistrate Grace Kahlert he was getting help for his mental health.

Ms Kahlert noted the offences on Robbins’ history and said this latest offending was “very concerning.”

The magistrate said she was not satisfied that a fine was appropriate in this case.

Ms Kahlert placed Robbins on 15 months’ probation with conditions, and disqualified him from driving for four months.

She further ordered Robbins pay the two sums of restitution totalling $790.

A traffic conviction was recorded but Ms Kahlert did not record a criminal conviction, telling Robbins he had “one last chance” in that regard.
