A Rockhampton woman was caught up in a situation akin to the 1960/70s film series about a VW race car when police witnessed her speeding along a main road, doing up to 130km/hr in a 60 zone.

Emma Kate Denton pleaded guilty on January 5 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to a charge for unauthorised street racing.

Police prosecutor Brandy Butler said police witnessed two high-performance cars driving northbound on Queen Elizabeth Drive about 11pm on November 13.

She said police witnessed Denton’ s silver Volkswagen – a car maker behind the 1968 film The Love Bug featuring a VW Beetle named Herbie – and another driver in a black Ford “begin to speed, making aggressive lane changes and swerve among other vehicles”.

Ms Butler said that after passing the other vehicles and entering the straight section of the road which turns onto Musgrave Street, the vehicles “extremely” accelerated side-by-side between Armstrong and Charles streets, before the VW driver pulled in front of the Ford leading to both braking and ending the road race.

She said the VW clocked up to 130km/h in the 60km/h zone and the Ford clocked up to 125km/h.

Police intercepted both vehicles and Denton’s VW as immobilised for 90 days under Queensland law.

Denton told the court she had no excuse for her behaviour.

She was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for 10 months.
