A man with a horrible traffic record for stealing a car, crashing a car into a house and driving at police multiple times, has just lost his driver’s licence for a further two years and three months and been slapped with a prison term.

Brandon Jacob Brown, 24, pleaded guilty on January 4 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one count of driving while disqualified and one of drug driving.

Brown was sentenced on May 25, 2021, for his fourth disqualified driving offence.

His licence was disqualified until May 24, 2023 on that occasion and Brown received a six month wholly suspended prison sentence in 2018, operational for two years, after stealing a car and going on a rampage through Central Queensland, driving at police and crashing into a house.

This time, Brown was intercepted driving at 9.20pm on July 9, 2021 – just over a month after receiving a suspended sentence for his fourth disqualified driving conviction – in Park Avenue with marijuana in his system.

He told police he was driving to get food.

Defence lawyer Lauren Townsend said Brown was struggling with depression at the time, not feeding himself or taking his medications.

“He was in a very bad place and making very poor decisions,” she said.

Ms Townsend said Brown had been the subject of an emergency mental health order six days prior, was looking at being evicted from share accommodation and had lost a romantic relationship.

She said he now had a stable romantic relationship and accommodation along with a job, volunteering for St Vincent de Paul, attending Oasis Church regularly and had achieved sobriety.

Acting magistrate Ron Muirhead said Brown’s driving record, “to put it mildly, was terrible”.

He sentenced Brown to nine months prison with immediate parole, activated the suspended sentence and ordered it be served concurrently.

Mr Muirhead also ordered Brown pay a $500 fine and disqualified him from driving for a further two years and three months.

“It appears you have finally woken up to yourself,” he said.
