Darryl Stewart Catlin fought security staff and police after being refused entry to The Strand Hotel

A man has been banned from The Strand Hotel at Yeppoon after his latest run-in with police, with a magistrate labelling his criminal history as “appalling.” Here’s what happened.

A man with a history of assaulting police officers has been banned from a Yeppoon hotel following his latest offending.

Darryl Stewart Catlin, 38, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on July 8 to public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises, as well as assaulting and obstructing a police officer.

Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said that on May 27 about 10.55pm, police were patrolling Anzac Parade at Yeppoon when they saw Catlin standing at the entrance of The Strand Hotel where he was speaking to security staff.

Ms Brown said Catlin was refused entry to the venue and he became involved in an argument with security which escalated into a physical altercation.

Ms Brown said when police approached, Catlin got into a physical altercation with them and attempted to punch an acting sergeant with “a closed right hand”.

The prosecutor said Catlin continually resisted arrest.

“Police gave numerous verbal directions for (Catlin) to release his arms, however he continued to struggle and resist,” Ms Brown said.

Police eventually handcuffed Catlin.

The court heard that Catlin had a six-page criminal history which included a suspended jail sentence in 2017 for assaulting and obstructing police.

Catlin also had an assault and obstruct police offence on his history from 2015 in a public place where he received community service.

In relation to his latest offending, the prosecution sought a banning order from The Strand Hotel.

Solicitor Joanne Madden said Catlin was a father who worked as a sandblaster.

Ms Madden said on the night of the offending, Catlin had been drinking “for quite some time” prior to going to The Strand Hotel and it was his partner’s son’s 18th birthday.

Before handing down penalty, Magistrate Jason Schubert described Catlin’s criminal history as an “appalling history” and he said Catlin was lucky he did not connect with the police officer when he threw the punch.

“...you can’t handle your alcohol because your history shows that you can’t,” Mr Schubert said.

“You shouldn’t have been drinking this much on that night, knowing your history, knowing that you lose control, knowing that you get yourself into trouble when you do so.”

Mr Schubert sentenced Catlin to four months’ jail with immediate parole.

Catlin was also banned from The Strand Hotel for 12 months.

Convictions were recorded.
