A man says he “reacted poorly” and that being spat at by anther man led to him losing his temper and punching him in the face outside a Rockhampton pub.

Connor Arthur Williams pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on November 20 to assaulting a man at Bartletts Tavern in Rockhampton City on March 20.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Caitlin Booker said the man was asked to leave by a female staff member about 12.50am and that an argument broke out between the man and Williams, who was standing outside the main entry with a security guard.

Senior Constable Booker said Williams pushed the man, which caused him to step back and lose a thong, before pointing for him to leave.

She said the man put his thong back on his foot and walked away.

She said Williams followed the man and that when he turned around Williams punched him to the side of the face, causing him to fall to the road, and again pointed for him to leave.

Police conducting patrols on Denham St saw Williams punch the man.

Police obtained information from the man and watched CCTV footage.

Senior Constable Booker said Williams was questioned by police and stated the man spat at the security guard and that he then pushed him away and told him to leave.

She said he stated the man made threats towards him and that he continued to push him away.

She said he further stated the man spat at him and that he punched him.

She said police did not see any spit on the ground where the assault occurred and did not find any spit on Williams.

She said Williams had no criminal history.

Williams, who was a manager at Red Lion Hotel, told the court he “reacted poorly” and that being spat at led him to lose his temper.

“It’s not the first time I’ve had to deal with said gentlemen as I work at licensed venues,” he said.

He was fined $700.

No criminal conviction was recorded.
