A Central Queensland father has been jailed after choking one of his young daughters and assaulting another.

Appearing in custody, the man was sentenced in Rockhampton District Court on Monday after pleading guilty to one count of choking, two counts of common assault and 34 counts of contravening a domestic violence order.

The court heard that all of the offences were domestic violence offences – something the man had a lengthy history of.

It was told the man was on parole for DV offending when he choked his 11-year-old daughter and assaulted his 15-year-old daughter in a Central Queensland town.

The victim of the 34 DVO contraventions was another family member.

The court heard the man choked the 11-year-old girl the day before her 12th birthday.

They had gone for a walk together when the girl asked: “What’s tomorrow?”

He responded by saying: “Not your birthday.”

With his left hand, the man then grabbed his daughter around her neck and tightened his grip for about 20 seconds.

The girl had difficulty breathing and she pushed her father away and told him to stop.

The court heard she was scared and walked away.

Not long after this, the man walked into a room where other family members were, including his 15-year-old daughter.

The man yelled at a female family member – the DVO victim – and threatened to kill her.

He then approached his 15-year-old daughter from behind and “shoved her” in the back using his shoulder and elbow.

The court heard the incident continued and the man grabbed the 15-year-old by the shirt.

It was told the ordeal continued and the three victims hid from the man and made multiple calls to Triple-0.

Barrister Julie Marsden said the man, who’d had issues with drugs, accepted the seriousness of his offending and after sentencing said he was willing to do a domestic violence course.

“He wants to apologise for his shameful behaviour... he says he knows he can do better,” Ms Marsden said.

She said when the man was released from custody, he could get work in the Gladstone area.

Judge Jeff Clarke sentenced the man to four years’ jail, declared 285 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, with parole eligibility at May 9, 2026.
