Cameron Oakley sexually assaulted woman at Allenstown residence

His advances were rejected earlier in the night and a text request for a bathroom tryst went unanswered. But this young Queensland sportsman and teacher’s aide wasn’t getting the message.

A sleeping mother who had rejected a representative footballer’s advances earlier in the night pretended to be asleep as he crept into her room and sexually assaulted her for 20 minutes.

The woman was sleeping with her children when Cameron Gregory Yoren Allen Kenneth Oakley first sent her a message to meet him in the bathroom for sex at 3.44am, Rockhampton District Court heard.

Oakley, 24, then snuck into the woman’s room at about 4.30am, first tapping on her shoulder and saying her name in an attempt to wake her up, before the sexual assault took place.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Sutton said the sexual assault started with Oakley touching the victim’s left breast.

He said Oakley made persistent attempts earlier that night to get the woman to have a drink with him.

Judge William Everson noted the victim woke to Oakley tapping her repeatedly on the shoulder and she pretended to still be asleep.

“Both were staying at the same house (in Allenstown) but neither were members of the household,” he said.

Judge Everson said the victim was scared and didn’t say anything as Oakley continued rubbing her chest before leaving 20 minutes later.

He said she complained to police hours later.

“Women need to be safe at night,” Judge Everson said.

The court heard Oakley was born and raised in Woorabinda and had played representative football in Central Queensland.

He has had continuous employment in the disability support sector and as a teacher’s aide since graduating Year 12 and now lives with his long-term partner and works in New South Wales.

Oakley’s criminal history had one record for possessing alcohol in a restricted area.

He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault and was ordered to pay $1000 fine with no conviction recorded.

“You need to respect women,” Judge Everson said.
