A Victorian man arrested in Central Queensland after transporting a caravan concealing 77kg of marijuana has achieved bail after his future mother-in-law put up $50,000 surety.

He claims he was just a casually employed truck driver for the man really responsible for the haul.

Brett John Gundry, 56, made a bail application in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 20.

His charges included supplying a dangerous drug, possessing the marijuana, and possessing the cocaine.

Police will allege Mr Gundry was part of a large interstate trafficking ring police investigated for three months and ended with police intercepting a tow truck carrying a caravan concealing more than 77kg of marijuana.

The tow truck was intercepted in North Rockhampton on December 6 about 5.40pm and 33g of cocaine was allegedly found in the roof of the truck, above the driver’s seat.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leech said the bail address proposed was with Mr Gundry’s partner in Victoria and police allege she assisted in the drug running and drugs were found at her mother’s house in Victoria.

However, defence barrister Tom Polley said there was no mention of this in the police report prepared for court and there was no evidence of their alleged involvement.

He said his client claimed he was a casual employee of the truck business who was hired to deliver the caravan from Victoria to Queensland.

Mr Polley claimed police allegedly only found text messages between his client and one of the co-accused.

He said his client had delivered a load to the alleged offending address at least once previously.

Mr Polley said despite Gundry’s 15-page criminal record, his last entry was from July 2010 and only six convictions for drug crimes including two for marijuana in 2002.

He said his client had an employment offer with a different business in Epping, Victoria, and would go back to living with his defacto partner of 26 years whom he has been engaged to for 12 months.

Mr Polley said his client’s future mother-in-law was willing to offer up $50,000 surety through her unencumbered home.

He said his client did not have a passport and this was his first bail application.

Magistrate Jason Schubert said the quantity of marijuana found was worth about $500,000 on the street.

“That was found in every concealable location in a caravan on a truck driven by the defendant,” he said.

Mr Schubert said police also located cocaine in a concealed compartment above the driver’s seat.

He said the four months Mr Gundry had spent in custody for this alleged offending would be more than what he would receive if found guilty and sentenced, due to his dated criminal history of which the last offence of real significance was from 2008.

Mr Schubert said Mr Gundry’s criminal record contained convictions for burglary, theft and receiving or handling stolen property.

“There are no like offences of supplying drugs,” he said.

Mr Schubert granted Mr Gundry bail with conditions, including providing the $50,000 surety, report to police regularly and no contact with his co-accused.

Mr Gundry’s charges were adjourned until May 18.
